Mexico is a traveler's paradise, crammed with a multitude of opposing identities: desert landscapes, snow-capped volcanoes, ancient ruins, teeming industrialized cities, time-warped colonial towns, glitzy resorts, deserted beaches and a world-beating collection of flora and fauna.

(The United States of Mexico , Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos)

This mix of modern and traditional, clichéd and surreal, is the key to Mexico's charm, whether your passion is throwing back margaritas, listening to howler monkeys, surfing the Mexican Pipeline, scrambling over Mayan ruins or expanding your collection of posable Day of the Dead skeletons.

Mexico is enjoyable year-round, but October to May is generally the most pleasant time to visit. The May-September period can be hot and humid, particularly in the south, and inland temperatures can approach freezing during December-February. Facilities are often heavily booked during Semana Santa (the week before Easter) and Christmas/New Year, the peak domestic travel periods.

Mexico's climate has something for everyone: it's hot and humid along the coastal plains, and drier and more temperate at higher elevations inland (Guadalajara or Mexico City, for example). Try to avoid the southern coast between July and September - the resorts are decidedly soggy and jam-packed.

Mexico

The economic activity slackened in 2005 with a GDP growth rate at 3% in 2005 whereas it was 4.4% in 2004. The IMF forecasts a 3.5% growth in 2006. This improvement in the economic situation is due to high oil prices and the relaxing of the monetary politicy. The weak point of the Mexican economy is its dependance on the North America : 80% of Mexican exports and imports are carried out with the US. Mexico holds sizeable natural resources : silver, gas and oil. Agriculture employs about a fourth of the active population. Mexico ranks among the world's largest producers of coffee, sugar, corn and oranges. Maquiladoras system, which has been growth's driving force since 1994, is currently undergoing a serious crisis. Maquiladoras, which were free zones with subcontracting factories for big American firms, are now suffering from Asian and Eastern European countries' competition where labour force is cheaper.

Petrochemicals, building, energy, transport and telecommunications are first plan sectors.

Mexico is the only one country which signed a commercial agreement with the United-States, the European Union, and Japan : Mexico is a member of the NAFTA, free trade agreement unifying the United States, Mexico and Canada since 1994. The country signed a free trade agreement with the European Union in 2000 and the commercial agreement signed with Japon came into force on April 2005.

Mexico's three largest export countries are the United States, Canada and Germany. Its three largest import countries are the United States, Canada and Japan. It mainly imports electrical machinery, equipment, machinery and mechanical appliances

Real Mexican food is quite unlike the dishes found in most Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants in other countries. In tourist areas youll find restaurants with familiar names and gringo menus, though the offerings will often be over-priced and not of a high standard.

If you have a taste for adventure you’ll be well rewarded in Mexico; if not stick to a few simple and traditional dishes that are almost always excellent and not too spicy. You’ll find standards much higher than if you search the menus for something familiar.

Mexican cuisine has some superb rich or spicy dishes, but we recommend that you take it easy for the first few days until your stomach has grown accustomed to its new environment.

Upset stomachs are commonly associated with unpurified water used in ice or used to wash salads and fruit, stressful traveling, or simply bacteria different to those at home. Mexicans also suffer when they travel abroad, and if you stay in Mexico for more than a few weeks you may even experience the same acclimatization disorders when you reach home.

Once you’ve settled down, however, do try some of the regional specialties. It’s all part of the experience, and for many people Mexican food is one of the great attractions of a vacation.
